With the rapid improvements being made for the internet and networking, getting an internet connection has never been easier. This has resulted in the internet being available in just about all of the places in the world.

Video games have a tendency to reach astronomically high numbers in terms of popularity because of the accessibility of the internet. Here we will discuss the popularity of League of Legends and how many players are playing League of Legends in 2022.

League of Legends and Its Player Count over the Years

The internet has indeed allowed video games to reach astronomical popularity and several video games have gone viral in weeks if not days. However, it is also true that maintaining this popularity is not easy.

The Rise and Fall of Video Games

Cyberpunk number of players

There are countless examples of games that have gone viral and gained tons of active players but have lost that player count within a matter of days. One great example of this is Cyberpunk 2077. It was one of the most anticipated games and acquired tons of players during the launch week. However, tons of bugs and glitches caused massive amounts of players to leave the game.

The steam charts clearly show the downfall of Cyberpunk. The game started at a peak concurrent player count of about 0.8 million players on Steam however this player count fell to just 45 thousand players in just two months. Now the game is averaging a daily concurrent player count of about 25 thousand players.

League of Legends – The Stats over the Years

Google and YouTube stats are a great way to analyze the popularity of something. It is simple, the more that people are searching about something, the popular it has to be. However, they don’t always present a clear picture of what is actually going on.

The Web Search trends for League of Legends show that a number of searches for the game peaked in 2014 and has slowly been decreasing since then. But this is misleading as it suggests that since 2014 the player count may be decreasing since then.

Revenue in billions US dollars

The Player Count Chart by League Feed clearly shows that the overall player count for League of Legends has not seen a major drop at all since 2014. Not only has it not dropped, but the player count has also been increasing at an impressive rate since 2014.

This revenue graph, from Statista.com, shows the revenue generated by League of Legends over the years starting from 2015 to 2020. This revenue graph is in line with the player count chart by League Feed. The League Feed chart shows a drop in player count from 2017 to 2018, which is also reflected on the revenue chart by Statista.com that shows a drop in revenue from 2017 to 2018.

The Current Player Count of League of Legends In 2022

It is now clear that the player count of League of Legends has seen a steady climb over the years. League of legends has now become one of the most popular MOBA games of 2022. Let’s explore more about how many players play the game in 2022.

The 180 Million Player Tweet

On the 1st of November 2021, Riot Games came out with an official statement about their player count through a Tweet. The Tweet stated that a total of 180 million players have been playing in October. This is a huge number, and according to the Tweet, it is still growing.

The Conclusion – League of Legends Player Count in 2022

From the tweet, we can see that Riot Games saw a jump of 180 million players but that’s for all of the games that exist inside the Runeterra universe. However, since League of Legends is their most popular game, it’s safe to assume that 80% of that 180 million is from League of Legends alone. So, that’s 144 million players.

Even then, a player count of 144 million is a serious jump compared to the 93 million players for October 2020. However, as we are observing the player count numbers for January 2022, it is clear that the amount of gain was not sustainable.

One major reason for the growth of players in October 2021 was the launch of the Arcane season. But now the dust has settled, and the player count has stabilized. With a player count of 158 million players in the month of January 2022, which is a solid 10% increase, League of Legends remains one of the most popular MOBA games for 2022.
